EXERCISE AND DRINKING WATER

Many exercisers mistakenly think that they only need to drink water when they are thirsty. However, they can become dehydrated well before they experience thirst. The best strategy is to drink water on a periodic basis during your exercise.

THINK ABOUT ZINC

The body requires zinc for maintenance of health and a strong immune system, normal skin function (improved wound healing), growth of reproductive organs, normal vision (especially at night) and maintenance of sensory functions (taste, smell). Studies have shown that zinc has significant anti-viral properties, especially for the common cold. Egg yolks, fish, soy products and whole grains are excellent dietary sources of Zinc.

KEEP YOURSELF COOL FOR A HEALTHY HEART

New research reveals that acute stress can diminish the body's ability to clear heart-damaging blood fats such as triglycerides which is a marker of heart disease risk. Your body may be better able to deal with blood fats if you keep your stress levels under control. Therefore, to protect your heart, you have to keep yourself cool by regularly practising stress reduction strategies, such as yoga or meditation.

Since most of us are prone to finding excuses for working out, the best time to do it is the time that will enable one to do it consistently. From a medical perspective, it is best to exercise shortly after arising in the morning. The body is more likely to burn off fat following an all night fast.

CHOLESTEROL IS BAD NOT ONLY FOR THE HEART BUT FOR BONES TOO.

It's no secret that high cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease, but new research suggests that it may also be bad for the bones. In a study of elderly women, those with higher levels of the "bad" form of cholesterol (LDLC) were much more likely to show signs of bone thinning (osteoporosis) than women with normal cholesterol.

FRUITS AND SKIN CANCER

Compounds found in fruits such as pomegranates and grapes may help protect against the changes that can lead to skin cancer. Tests on mice show that extracts from the fruits can slow down or prevent the pre-cancer damage done to skin by chemicals or sunlight.

VEGETABLES, FRUITS AND STOMACH CANCER

TA recent study revealed that eating only one serving per week of yellow or orange-colored vegetables, such as carrots, may reduce the risk of stomach cancer by 36 percent. Eating white-colored vegetables, such as Chinese cabbage, and eating fruit also were strongly associated with a reduced risk.

FOOTWEAR FOR EXERCISE

The proper shoe to wear while walking does not have to be a "costly" shoe. Any shoe that fits well and is comfortable is appropriate. The better shoes are those that are well cushioned and have a rubber sole. You should always wear socks when you walk.

PESTICIDES- ARE THEY JUSTIFIED ALWAYS?

Researchers who recently tested the antioxidant content of corn that had been grown with and without the use of pesticides found that the corn grown without the chemicals had almost 60% more flavonoids compared to the corn grown with pesticides. Flavonoids are a type of antioxidant nutrient associated with reduced cancer risk.

TATTOO CAN CAUSE SO MANY HEALTH PROBLEMS.

Most chemicals used in tattoos are industrial pigments originally used for other purposes, such as automobile paints or writing inks, and there are little or no safety data to support their use in tattoos. Apart from the risk of infections, such as HIV, hepatitis, or bacterial infections from dirty needles, tattooing could cause skin cancer, psoriasis, toxic shock syndrome or even behavioral changes.

BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

The metabolic changes occurring with exercise reflect better utilization of energy by body tissues. Even in the absence of weight loss, exercise will help you lower both LDL-"bad" cholesterol and triglycerides, while raising HDL cholesterol.

PREVENTION OF FOOD POISOINING

To prevent Food poisoning, do not eat meat, salads or other foods that have been kept for more than two hours between 34 degree C and 40 degree C. It is better to avoid raw eggs or sauces made with raw eggs. Discard any cans or jars with bulging lids or leak.

DIABETES-FRIENDLY RICE

Japanese laboratory researchers have developed genetically modified rice as an effective treatment for Diabetes. The newly developed rice strain contains a high level hormone, the GLP-1, which promotes release of insulin from the pancreas. Disturbance of insulin secretion or of insulin action is the cause of diabetes
